What are the advantages of reading an ebook?

I have found an interesting article on ebooks and e-reading talking about the advantages of e-books. But first of all, what exactly is an ebook? It is a electronic format of a book.

It has several advantages as follows:

3) Ebooks are portable so you can carry 1000's of books in when you are traveling anywhere.

4) Ebooks are easier to read and information can be easily searched unlike in printed books where you will need to flip the pages.

What do you think are ebooks main disadvantages? Do you find it hard to read an ebook?

5) Some ebooks come with lot of bonuses, which you cannot get with the published version.

6) Ebooks contain links to information and websites so that you can easily access more related information.

7) They take up a lot less space than a printed book and you will not need a bookshelf to keep an ebook.

8) Many ebooks are interactive and contains audios, videos and flash which makes reading more appealing and entertaining.

9) It is possible to read ebooks anywhere nowadays due to the advancement in technology.

10) They cost much lesser than the printed format and there is also no extra shipping and packaging charges.

  1. I find it very hard to read an e-book. I tried downloading an e-book once, but I only reached the fifth page of the book, when I decided I can't do this and ordered the book instead.
I think it is suitable for some people, but a lot of them (like me) find e-books difficult to read. I see their main disadvantage in the fact, that you have to have a certain technology in order to read it (for example a computer or noadays the IPad). And I can't imagine to have that with me, when I am on the beach, for example. You need electricity or bateries in order to use it. If you don't have that somewhere, the e-book (or the technology you read it on) is useless. The ordinary book is not. Secondly, I find it harmful for my eyesight (more harmful than an ordinary book, anyways). And thinrdly, I think that every day we are surrounded with technology , so it is relaxing sometimes to put all this technology aside and read an ordinary book instead.

  2. Hello Tina,

I agree that e-books are really attractive and they offer many advantages, as portability, versatility, links, cost effectiveness etc., that we can not even imagine in paper based world. I am glad that also publishing industry started exploiting creative and multimedia advantages of digital age more effectively and maybe e-books will encourage more people to read. I was thinking about disadvantages of e-book and all I remember is its uncommon, intangible format that is also less permanent and maybe as Ines already pointed out less eye-friendly. In my opinion, nostalgia and cultural heritage are reasons that printed books will not disappear despite of their more efficient digital versions.

    Best,
    Maja
