Recently I read an interesting article Social Media Saves Lives: Salmonella Outbreak Pushes HHS, FDA, CDC to Get Social about how social media can be used for quick and effective information sharing. This article caught my attention because it shows how new media can be used literally for saving lives. In this case sharing information saved lives of people who could have been infected with salmonella, and the article is stressing out how the US government is now embracing social media as an effective channel for communications.
This case is only on example how Web 2.0 technologies will be integrated into health agencies from now on and how new media is enabling valuable collaboration.

I read a similar article a while ago - it wasn't about health, but about how the media worked in the case of the Haiti earthquake. I don't remember the exact details or the name of the article (if I did, I would be glad to post a link), but I remember that the author said that when the earthquake happened, the local media launched a report in a matter of minutes. Then the news came to the foreign media in the next half hour and because of that, the foreign organizations and even individuals could offer their help even before the Haiti organizations could ask for it. This is also an example of how quickly the media work and it is nice to see that the media are really a helpful agent when it comes to problems such as the one you mentioned or in the case of disasters, such as the Haiti earthquake.
